Guitar Hero Project begins - Joe Wings

Group shot of Wings after the show

Me and zul travel all the way to Penang hunting the first Guitar Hero in my list and he was none other than Joe from the legendary band 'Wings' back in 1987. I got the privilege to be backstage and setup a simple lighting for the shoot thanks to Ijan of Sayap-sayap Wings for making it worthwhile.

Joe 'Wings'

The shoot went well. I was backstage and shouted "hey joe, come and sit over here! I wanna shoot your head!" and he said "Yea! Ok!" After couple of shot we shake hand 'rocker' style and they went on to perform. After the show me and Belanda arrange a group shot of them before we all went to Kapitan Restaurant before we head back and I was sooo cool.

It's partially true... actually it went like this.

The shoot went well but I must admit that I failed to make the subject comfortable with a laid back conversation. I was fucking nervous man! A rookie shooting big names. But they were cool with it and that helps. I was getting ready with the setup and they were on the other room when I noticed Joe getting ready for the show. After a while I approached him, intro myself and invite him for a short sitting. He was kinda reluctant that makes me more nervous but I got the shot.

And then came Black the drummer. No problem taking a straight forward portrait of him.

Eddie(Bassist) is great striking an old school year book pose.

And then came Awie, the vocal. I think he was so used to the magazine photoshoot he got no problem getting a magazine look in his photo.

After a while he got self-conscious and strike this one..."Provocative pose from chief of Naga Keramat" he joked about the roumors of him getting involved in a mob.

After the show me and zul went back to our hostel we checked in earlier near Kapitan restaurant to eat. And there again they came at the restaurant. They seems like they can't get enough of us!

Triangular Lighting

Just came back from Melaka for a job and this guy here brought an extra light for a quick shoot. Three light, means triangular, means cool lightings. His sb800 is spot on but i have a problem with my cheap wireless receiver. Sometimes it flashes but sometimes it doesn't. But hey! I can get 8 of it for 1 pocket wizard. Stop complaining.
So I took this chance for my self indulgence.

Caught in the headlight 2

Yet another progress of the series

Cool Band!

I came across this jamming session video on youtube and they are quite unbelievable. The band play the covers of 'Search' song and although the quality of the sound is a mess but they sounded like the original! I personally like the solo by the lead guitarist in this band. SUPERB!! :p~~~. Anyway there's a lot more videos of these guys playing 80's classics rock here.

Hamir Soib

One of the artist in the Matahati group. Went to his 'Gudang' to shoot a portrait of him for my portrait series. A very warm and down to earth guy although he's a big shot in Malaysian visual art scene and probably in Asia. Right at the moment, he's preparing a painting for an exhibition held in Singapore in September. A large 10x10 feet tortoise hanging on the wall that give somewhat an eery feeling when you enter his studio. Most of his paintings are huge. Why? Because he used to work as a set artist for theater and movies, most notably 'Anna and the King'.

The shoot took place in his studio. A large dark poorly lit warehouse in Damansara with lots of props from the previous job. He just finished an interview when I arrived. My camera can't really focus well when we do the headshot because of the dim light and I don't have a modelling light, so he pull out his lighter from his pocket and help me lit his face. He's being really helpful throughout the process seeing me running here and there with a very limited equipment. Thanks dude. Anyway the shoot turns out well. What I need now is an assistance and a damn good equipment.

Prep

Made a triangular softbox out of wires, cotton, nylon, alluminium foil, etc. Will show the product later on. Anyway this is the test result with the DIY softbox.

A prep to shoot Hamir Soib tomolo..

Caught In A Headlight

At last... After looking for a willing model for a photo shoot for a 'Caught in a headlight' mug shot series (which is still on progress), I have started to paint again. I haven't paint for looooong time to be honest and this is a very exciting moment. I've met with Mr. Bad last month and he mentioned that he don't believe a skill will fade if you don't practice which I totally agree. I'm still BAADASSSSS! Anyway, I thought i'd put up some progress of the paintings here.

Dikala Jingga

Nurazmal Mohd Yusoff aka Ali

Samsuddin Lappo aka Sudin

Studio Dikala Jingga was formed in 2000 when six young artists decided to have an art space after graduating from UiTM Shah Alam in Fine Arts. The group recently organized a three men show entitled 'Tellutau' in Lookiss gallery Damansara. Participating in this show are these men and Zul, managed by Khairina, another member of this group. These shot were taken after the event 'postmortem' :p. The photos of the event can be seen here
